On most beaches in Germany, you can rent one for the day or for a few hours, sit inside, put your feet on the footrest, swing back the hood to catch all the sun you want and be snug for hours, while reading your book and enjoying a coffee.
Soon you will be able to enjoy these comforts at your own front door, in beautiful, sunny Bunbury!
Built-in details, like extendable footrests, sun awning, side folding tables and storage space, provide the user with several comforts.
A sheltered space for relaxing on the beach, providing seating and shelter from wind, rain, sand gusts and sunburn on beach.
These beach lounge chairs also make the beach more accessible for the elderly or people with disabilities, as they remove the need to get up from the sand. Chair height makes it easy to transfer from the wheelchair into chair.

The Strandkorb (distinctly German, translates to ”beach basket”)
In 1882, the Strandkorb (in English the expression used is “beach lounge chair”) was invented by German basket maker Wilhelm Bartelmann of Rostock, on request of Elfriede Maltzahn, a noble woman, who suffered from rheumatism. She loved being at the beach and wanted protection from sun and wind while sitting at the ocean side. He designed this clever, pragmatic piece of beach furniture for her comfort and shelter, which was originally single seated and canopied. It is traditionally made from wood, wicker and canvas with an adjustable hood for variable seating positions.
It was a novelty for other beach-goers and became such a success that he felt encouraged to also design a two-seater model.
The 150 year long success story of the “Strandkorb” went from these humble beginnings to being an item that is part of everyday life in Germany now. Nowadays, the large, sturdy armchair-style seat with an adjustable hood for wind and sun protection, is dotted along nearly every beach and seaside resort of the North Sea and Baltic Sea, and along the shores of many lakes.
In my own fond memory from 60 years ago, as a small child on summer holidays with my family, the beach lounge chair was my “home port” on long days on the beach, a place to dry off, curl up and rest after hours of play, enjoy an ice cream or a picnic lunch, check in with my parents or dump pocketfuls of shells I had collected.
In time, the “Strandkorb” has also found it’s way on patios, roof-top verandas, in hotels and restaurants, cafes and private gardens, in fact anywhere there’s a need for stylish, comfortable and cosy seating. It can be fitted with castor wheels for easy relocation or adjustment to the position of the sun.
